Islands and bridges

In a Cricut stencil, an island is a piece of vinyl that the blade cuts free on every side, like the middle of the letter O. When you peel the stencil off, the island stays behind or drops out, and the shape of your design is lost. A bridge is a thin strip that keeps the piece joined to the stencil. Fix all adds bridges before you export the SVG.

How wide can my Cricut cut?

The SVG imports at about 10 inches wide. Resize it in Design Space to fit your machine and your material. These are the common limits, so check the specs of your own machine.

MachineMaximum cut width
Cricut Joy4.5 in (11.4 cm)
Cricut Joy Xtra8.5 in (21.6 cm)
Explore and Maker, standard mat11.5 in (29.2 cm)

Need a bigger stencil? Cut it in one piece on a longer roll of material if your machine supports it, or scale the design down.

How to make a stencil with Cricut from your SVG

Export the SVG from this page. Each layer is its own group, and the file is about 10 inches wide, so you will resize it for your project. SVG needs a 7-Day Pass or Lifetime unlock. The PNG and PDF exports are free.

In Cricut Design Space, choose Upload, then Upload Image, then Browse, and pick the SVG file. Save it as a Cut image and insert it on your canvas. Set the size, and check that the bridges are there before you cut.

Pick the material you are cutting, for example stencil vinyl or adhesive vinyl, put it on the mat and press Make It. Cricut cuts the outline of every black shape. Peel the black shapes out and keep the sheet with the holes. That sheet is your stencil.

Stick the stencil on your surface and press the edges down well. For a sharp edge, seal the edges first with a thin coat of the background color, let it dry, and then paint. Peel the stencil off while the paint is still a little wet.
